The “Street Boys Club” started at YMCA Esplanade as a night school, was the precursor to the ‘Home for the Homeless’ established at Fort St.George in 1947. The Street Boys Club then came to be called the “Boys Town”.

Objective ...

Rehabilitating the street children, converting the destitute children into responsible citizens and giving the ‘light of learning’ and a future to the destitute.

Providing…

Opportunities for mental, physical, and spiritual growth and empowers with education and vocational skills.

Some noteworthy features..

Carpentry section, rattan training, welding workshop, a multipurpose hall and a chapel.

Unlike conventional orphanages, the YMCA Boys Town not only provides food, accommodation and education for its inmates, but also trains them in professional crafts and ensures that they are successfully rehabilitated.

The modest beginning, which started as a night school for pavement dwellers and rag pickers, eventually saw the functioning of a destitute home and now as a higher secondary school with over 2000 children and 50 teachers

After formal education till the VIII Standard, boys are assessed according to their performance and are either sent for higher education or placed in the industrial section where useful trades like Carpentry, Rattan work and Welding are taught. On completion of vocational training, efforts are made to place the boys in suitable employment. Thousands of boys have been rehabilitated and are happily settled in life as respectable citizens.
